When you make a game series that pumps out annual entries, there is sure to be some temptation to break from the formula and try something radical and different.  Fortunately(?), EA Sports has been able to avoid falling into this trap year in and year out with it’s NCAA Football franchise.

Read all about it after the jump.

I question whether or not that’s a good thing only because it is still an extremely solid representation of real life college football. The ridiculous scoring, home run plays, and even marching bands are represented well in this game; however, some of the more basic football necessities like formation substitutions are once again left on the backburner.

Of the new features, the ones that really stand out are:

  • Season Showdown - New game mode that allows you to choose a school of your choice to represent for the season.  Playing in exhibitions against the computer and against human opponents will raise your school’s standing as you battle through the real college football season to see who’s university is truly the greatest.

  • Team Builder - An in-depth custom team creation engine provided by EA Sports at their NCAA Football homepage.  Using this tool you can create a team and personalize it down to the piping on your uniforms pants and then use this team in your game, you can even use it in online dynasties.

  • Erin Andrews - Eye Candy

When all is said and done, the game as a whole is very enjoyable and worth a look for any fan of virtual football. It’s just that there isn’t much to say other than this game feels feel more like a yearly update when compared with the hype on the back of it’s own box.

Pros: TeamBuilder is very deep and really allows for a personal team, Season Showdown could make for some great online rivalries, Erin Andrews

Cons: Road to Glory is a new title and not much else, EA will charge you REAL money for VIRTUAL in game recruiting

It's always a disappointment to find the new edition similar to previous iterations. What else can you expect though?

I'll be picking my copy up around the time Madden NFL 10 hits. So excited for that game.
