2K Sports has announced Baseball Blast! an offbeat minigame-centered baseball experience coming this fall exclusively for the Wii. This title seems like it could fall into the trap of being another Wii shovelware party game however, Baseball Blast! promises a little more authenticity than most minigame collections on the Wii with its full MLB license. All the MLB teams will be represented and there will be commentary by Rob Dibble and Bob Uecker to appease MLB enthusiasts.

There will be over 20 different mini-games based around baseball. Some revealed names of minigames are Fly Ball Fury, Carni-ball, Power Pitcher, Bumper Base, Pennant Race, and Galaxy Ball. All of these games seem pretty silly judging by the titles alone. My guess is they will likely be centered on the basic baseball mechanics we’ve seen in Wii Sports with cartooney environments or twists thrown in to change things up.

The most appealing thing in the game to hardcore baseball fans might be the trivia challenges, although 2K sports is only promising 100 trivia questions. With the MLB license we can expect some pretty accurate trivia that should be more interesting than general questions like “how far is it from home plate to first base?” Actually, I’m willing to bet that that one might be in there too.

It’s too early to really know what to make of this game but my guess would be that if you are a hardcore baseball fan or a hardcore gamer, you might not be too into this game. However. if you are a fan of Major League Baseball and you have a family or a group of friends who is at least casually invested in baseball or video games, this might be a good party game for you and them. We’ll have to see some actual screens and gameplay from this game before we can really get a good idea about how good or bad this game is going to be.
