Now for a little bit of college sportsmanship. Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount was upset at Boise State’s Byron Hout for taunting after Boise State defeated Oregon 19 to 8. If you haven’t seen how Blout handles his defeat, here it is:
Now I know what you’re thinking: “Man that Hout guy looks like a douche. I mean he has a face that is just begging to be punched. He did go out of the way to taunt Blount after the game, if there was a penalty for unnecessary douchebaggerry, he would get it”
I agree with you on all these counts, but there is a little more to the story than that. You see, number 14 Boise State and number 16 Oregon have a little history so before the game Blout was quoted saying that Boise State’s last victory over the Ducks was a fluke and that they would kill them this game. When you talk trash before a game and then lose quite handily, I believe Hout is entitled to a little post game taunting. It is actually a case of necessary douchebaggery. Of course, Hout has got to realize that when ou get in the face of someone like that after the game, there is always the risk that the guy will lay you out.
More after the jump
So the punch of Hout alone is almost justifiable. If that was all he did, Blount might have gotten suspended a game or two and that would have been the end of it. But that wasn’t just it. After the punch, Blount is visibly pleased with himself, doing a little gangsta shimmy, and then he starts fighting with his teammates who are trying to get him to cool it. Then he tries to go at the crowd or “go Artest” as a guest on Jim Rome so eloquently put it. The guy basically had to be restrained and pulled off the field because he was throwing a tantrum all because he talked trash and lost.
Basically, Blount got completely owned. He talked trash and he couldn’t back it up, his team lost. In sports you can’t win by just knocking dudes out (unless it’s boxing or MMA) so if your only answer to losing is to just punch dudes, you are not mentally equipped to play sports (again with the exception of combat sports). If you talk trash and lose, expect to hear it from your opposition, and rightfully so. Now Blount is suspended indefinitely which means his season and possibly his career is over. The dude obviously has some issues to work out but I have a hard time feeling bad for him, even if the guy he hit does look like a douche.
