A lot of people debate the term “athlete”, what qualifies an athlete in your mind?
Good question! To us, competitive gamers are indeed athletes as they possess amazing hand-eye coordination and dexterity. These gamers spend countless hours training and fine tuning their skills, just like any other athlete. To illustrate our point, compare video gaming to archery. Archery is simply someone shooting an arrow at a target, which requires using your eyes and hands and a lot of practice. This sounds pretty similar to video gaming if you ask me. That is why we believe if Archery is an Olympic sport, then video gaming should be one as well!
If we believe ourselves to be among the gaming pantheon, how do we go about joining the team?
First, you must be 18 and over, since we are dealing with real cash. Then, players must go to Galaxy4Gamers.com and sign up (sign ups are free) and win at least two games in their preferred gaming genre (with the minimum entry value). After two wins, you must fill out an application in order to advance (deadline is Oct. 30, 2009 @ 12pm PST). Selected applicants will then be organized and placed into G4G tournaments that will take place in November 2009. The winners of the tournament will be announced in December 2009, and in January 2010, these gamers will officially embark on their newly found gaming career as an elite G4G CyberAthlete team member. Exactly how many of these fantastic s positions are open?
There are only 9 elite G4G CyberAthlete positions available. We are looking for 3 players from each of the 3 different regions of the United States - West Coast, Central, and East Coast. Our goal is to find skilled individuals to be the faces of our company and to build the best gaming team to not only represent G4G, but to also become leaders in the professional gaming industry. Something else we’re also really excited about is our next national search, where we’ll be looking to sponsor gaming teams (a.k.a. “clans”) to represent G4G in the first person shooter team tournaments for Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3. This means our G4G CyberAthlete team should consist of around 25 professional gamers by the end of 2010, something we’re really looking forward to.
What consoles should we be good at playing if we want to join this group?
Currently, Galaxy4Gamers supports XBOX360, XBOX, PS3, PS2 and Wii. We have strayed away from PC until we develop our anti-cheating client. PC has too many issues with cheaters and hackers and when real money is on the line, this could potentially be a major problem. Cheating remains our #1 priority and anyone caught doing anything funny is immediately banned from our site.
Alright, now is this a shooter group? Or can you be good at other genres?
Our CyberAthlete search is focused not only on the first-person shooter genre, but also sports and fighting genres, since that is what is offered in most of the in-person tournaments. While the shooter genre usually gets most of the attention in competitive gaming, we decided a long time ago to focus on several different types of categories, which is why we offer games in several other genres, from strategy to music as well. We even plan to offer some casual gaming opportunities next year, so if you’re the best at Pacman, hit us up! Bottom-line, is we’re looking for anyone who excels at any game, regardless of the genre.
Tell us more about Galaxy4Gamers.com, how’d it get started?
Being a hard-core gamer myself, I got together with a couple other gamers with the intention of developing a website where you could win real money based on video game SKILL and not just dumb luck. Coming back from too many Vegas trips with an empty wallet definitely helped in the formation of the idea as well. We then surveyed the market and other gamers and realized there was a need for this type of website, and the rest they say is history.
Most importantly, what kind of goods/shwag do we get as a part of this team?
G4G CyberAthletes get their travel and expenses paid for to attend the large in-person tournaments in their respective regions. Obviously the usual stuff like G4G branded shirts, hats, tracksuits, headsets, controllers, headbands, stickers, and various video gaming paraphernalia will be provided to the CyberAthlete Team, but we feel the best “goods” will be the promotions and fame they get on our website and marketing materials. Members of the team will be the faces of our company and will receive heavy promotional opportunities.
