Virtual golf is one of those genres that can excel in practically any format. I’ve played loads of quality golf games on pretty much everything I’ve ever touched. The genre isn’t obligated to numerous buttons, which makes it perfect for the iPhone, right?
When considering virtual golf in general, Let’s Golf does a good job of showcasing the iPhone’s potential. Conversely, its lasting appeal is lowered due to significant gameplay and display problems. But still, for $1.99, Let’s Golf is a must have.
If you've been looking for an authentic golf game, it has finally arrived with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. While Nate was playing and writing up the review for TW10 on the next-gens, I was able to play the Wii version, and I must say that if you're looking to pick up a copy of TW10, the Wii version with the MotionPlus accessory is the way to go. Sure, the 360 and PS3 versions are better in the graphics department, but for overall experience and playability the Wii has got the next-gen consoles beat. Since we already have a Tiger Woods 10 review, I might as well talk about the one item exclusive to the Wii, MotionPlus.
The MotionPlus accessory adds a new level of depth to the swing mechanics in Tiger Woods 10. If you're new to golf -- or this series, and have no idea how to swing a golf club -- prepare to feel like Charles Barkley: Terrible. Proper technique is rewarded when using the MotionPlus add-on. A slight twist of the wrist left or right allows you to put a draw or fade on the ball in order to hit around the trees. Likewise, a more aggressive twist of the wrist can completely slice a ball off the course and out of bounds. But, after a bit of practice it's easy to get those 300 yard drives. The real improvement that MotionPlus brings to TW10 is Precision Putting. If you haven't played previous versions of Tiger Woods PGA Tour before, the old way to putt was by selecting clubs of varying power/distance and judging which was best suited for your situation. However, with Precision Putting and real life, you've only got one putter and your own hands to measure how hard to hit the ball to sink your putt. This is how a golf game should be played.
A couple days ago, art/environment producer for Tiger Woods 10, Reza Elghazi, announced the development of The Predator, a fan favorite course that was last seen in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 07 (PS2 and Xbox versions).
Now for those of you who remember The Predator, you know what to expect. For the ignorant, let me tell you about The Predator: Its the most frustrating course EVAR! Obstacles are everywhere with decent placed balls unavoidably adding a few strokes to your game. The terrain is easily the most devestating feature. You may think your ball will lay nicely next to the pin, but don't be surprised if it starts to roll at high speed past the fringe and into the rough.
Definitely a course for the experienced Tiger players.
Hit the jump to see how the remaking came about and how the TV series Lost (?) influenced the environment.
What's better then owning an awesome game ripped to a DVD or CD-R? Owning an awesome game that doesn't require any disc at all. That's what EA Sports intends to do with its launch of an online-only based Tiger Woods for PC/Mac. Although this is a huge and novel step for the gaming industry as well as EA, this venture seems somewhat expected for this day and age. With products like the iPhone, PSP Go, Onlive and various downloadable services, the demand for convenient and digital purchase is perfectly clear. This project is one of the many signs of gaming’s [potentially long-term] future.
Little is known about the game, but let me tell you, I signed up for beta-testing immediately. Being able to play on my low-end PC without splurging more than 12 MB using a technologically advanced browser, well, that’s all I need. . . I’m sold.
What’s EA’s reason for an online-only Tiger Woods edition? Does this explain why PC users didn’t receive a title last year? What are the developers able to do that would otherwise be impractical on consoles?
Despite not winning the US Open last week, Tiger Woods still has something to be proud of this week, his latest video game release. While there is nothing "ground breaking" about it, the game delivers upgrades to all its components and adds a few new features that make the game more enjoyable than its predecessors (which won sports game of the year). The Dynamic Weather is a bit annoying and the new live tournaments are hard to compete in, but overall Tiger Woods delivers a great reason for console golfers to upgrade once again. Not surprisingly it received an "Editor's Choice" and an overall grade of 4.5/5 stars, which is not too shabby for a game with no earth shattering changes. If you'd like to see the full review, check it out on GamePro.com. Here's a quick and tempt your review palate:
Pros:
• Official partnership with USGA
• Upgraded course and player graphics
• Club tuner technology
• Tournament challenge video intros from Tiger
• Hank Haney coaching support
• Dynamic ability calculator
• Play the Pros live tournament option
• Online Matches/foursomes
• New Characters/Courses
• Scott Van Pelt’s sweet sweet voice
Cons:
• Live Tournament scoring is unrealistic
• Dynamic Weather functionality can be annoying
• Incorrect announcing in certain situations
• Tournament Challenge matches with UI take too long
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 is coming soon. It should be released June 8th. The Wii version looks particularly interesting with its use of the new Wii Motion Plus controls. We're excited to get some hands-on time with it at E3 this coming week.
Here is a video of the 360/PS3 version in action.
Check out some gameplay on the Wii after the jump.
As I mentioned earlier, today is a GREAT day for Tiger Woods golf fans. EA Sports debuted a plethora of videos showing off new golfers, new courses and its new live tournament feature for the next iteration of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour '10 franchise, set to hit stores June 8th.
The new golfers, for me, are interesting selections that I'm not unhappy about, but perhaps a little dissapointed with. First up is the SoCal phenom Anthony Kim, who at just 23 years young shocked the European Ryder Cup team with four days of straight domination to help lead the US to victory. This to me is not a surprising pick, as Kim had an extremely successful 2008 campaign (especially without Tiger around). However, he's also sponsored by Nike (as is Tiger) and thus I'm sure it didn't hurt Tiger's negotiations with Nike to have another one of their athletes in his video game. Something along the lines of "you scratch my back" I'm thinking.
Second on the tee is Rocco Mediate, who by no means "deserves" to be in this game over other players like Phil Mickelson, but gets the nod because he's good friends with Tiger (as Tiger says in the video below). While I can appreciate Tiger's decision to include only friends in his game (I'd do the same thing) it does take away a little bit of the fun factor when players in the top 10 are missing from a game that is supposed to be THE golf game.
Another week of interesting announcements regarding Tiger Woods PGA Tour '10. Not only have they decided to move up the release date on the game to June 8th, but they are also putting their money where your mouth is, in an attempt to create another viral video success!
On Monday, EA Sports announced that Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii will release a week earlier than expected. As well Grand Slam Tennis will also ship out the same day in North America in an effort to get the new Wii Motion Plus remote in the hands of anxious Wii gamers (let's start calling them Wigamers). For those of you that missed our previous discussion on the new Wii Motion Plus remote, here's a refresher.
With Tiger Woods tearing up the golf course at Quail Hollow Championships (both literally and figuratively), but his new game still over 6 weeks away, I've had a crazy craving for some new golf. Fortunately for me, that new golf came to me! Enter World Golf Tour, a browser based game that implements full HD quality. Their claim to fame is that their course is within 1.5 inches of the actual course design (a pretty nifty feat that I'll have to put to the test eventually).
With premiere courses already in place like Kiawah Island, Wolf Creek and Bali Hai golf clubs, the company announced recently a partnership with the USGA to create a "Virtual Open" to run in relation with the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach. As well, they're also looking for a talented individual to be their David Feherty. That's right they're going to send a lucky winner to the 2009 US Open as their first official Video Blogger (I think I need to fire my agent over this).
